Our Story
Mogwai Labs is a family business created out of a love for crafted beverages, travel, community and its connection to nature. We have actively worked in the Australian craft beer scene for years. We have accumulated knowledge of beer, it's heritage and its relationship to a region, including the foraging and use of wild yeast and spontaneous fermentation practices. Through these experiences we found a better understanding and appreciation for yeast, and its importance in producing quality, unique products.
Mogwai Labs is the brainchild of Joshua Allen, experienced scientist and brewer. Josh brings his expertise in fermentation solutions and yeast production through university qualifications and over 10 years of experience in the field. His partner Elly, has over 20 years experience working in community health, customer service and administration.
As a business, our aim is to enable an improved connection to yeast and associated services, for brewers and other beverage makers to create better quality and novel products, contributing to a blossoming industry fueled by creativity and community.
Joshua Allen
founder & director
A University of Wollongong alumni in biological sciences, Josh has over 10 yrs of medical research experience primarily in neuroscience and cancer cell replication biology. Josh's professional career diversified into engineering and professional brewing industries. Notably, he was a co-founder and brewer of itinerant Sydney brewing outfit, Merchant Brewing Co. It was during this period of commercial brewing, that he recognised a need to provide local brewers with better access to yeast and fermentation solutions.
